Correlation length and negative phase velocity in isotropic dielectric-magnetic materials

    Get PDF
A composite material comprising randomly distributed spherical particles of two different isotropic dielectric-magnetic materials is homogenized using the second-order strong-property-fluctuation theory in the long-wavelength approximation. Whereas neither of the two constituent materials by itself supports planewave propagation with negative phase velocity (NPV), the homogenized composite material (HCM) can. The propensity of the HCM to support NPV propagation is sensitive to the distributional statistics of the constituent material particles, as characterized by a two--point covariance function and its associated correlation length. The scope for NPV propagation diminishes as the correlation length increases

    Rearing orphan kangaroos

    Get PDF
LICENCES are required in Western Australia if certain kangaroos and all species of wallabies are kept in captivity, but orphaned young joeys often need care and hand feeding before they can be released to fend for themselves

Buying veterinary products : read the label first

    Get PDF
Chenicals for animal health, and processed feeds must be registered and labelled. Registration is intended to insure that products are effective for the purpose they are sold, and safe when used according to instructions. It is important to read the lable to understand the correct use of the product

Two causes of reduced profit from pigs

    Get PDF
LOSS of condition in a pig affects profits more severely than slow rate of growth. Two common symptoms, scouring and itching, cause weight loss and are followed by a period of reduced weight gain

Planck Scale Cosmology in Resummed Quantum Gravity

We show that, by using resummation techniques based on the extension of the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura to Feynman's formulation of Einstein's theory, we get quantum field theoretic predictions for the UV fixed-point values of the dimensionless gravitational and cosmological constants. Connections to the phenomenological asymptotic safety analysis of Planck scale cosmology by Bonanno and Reuter are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

Radiative corrections in processes at the SSC

We discuss radiative corrections for interactions in the SSC environment. Based on the theory of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura, we develop appropriate Monte Carlo event generators to compute the background electromagnetic radiation. Our results indicate that multiple-photon effects must be taken into account in the study of SSC physics such as Higgs decay.Comment: UTHEP-92-0901, 15 pages (incl. 3 figures), LaTeX (Talk presented at the XXXII Cracow School of Theoretical Physics, Zakopane, June 1992

Massive Elementary Particles and Black Holes

An outstanding problem posed by Einstein's general theory of relativity to the quantum theory of point particle fields is the fate of a massive point particle; for, in the classical solutions of Einstein's theory, such a system should be a black hole. We use exact results in a new approach to quantum gravity to show that this conclusion is obviated by quantum loop effects. Phenomenological implications are discussedComment: 11 pages; 1 figure; improved text relating to asymptotic safet
